Alastair Sooke studies the work of French artist Henri Matisse, examining the way he changed perceptions of colour with paintings including Dance and The Red Studio, which broke contemporary rules in the art world. In addition to visiting locations that inspired the painter and the present St Petersburg and New York homes of his works, the critic also investigates the new techniques pioneered by Matisse in the post-war years, when ill-health left him unable to hold a paintbrush.
